Jewelry Restoration
Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco, mid-century, heirloom
Can you restore an antique or heirloom piece?
Yes. Restoration returns a worn or damaged piece as close to its original condition as possible. We specialize in filigree rebuilding, period-appropriate stone replacement, engraving restoration, and reconstruction of missing sections. We always discuss what to preserve and what to rebuild before starting.
Restoration versus repair
Repair fixes a specific failure. Restoration returns the whole piece to something close to its original condition. The difference matters because restoration involves more decisions: which parts of the piece's history should be preserved? Which worn details are part of the character? Which details are damage and should be rebuilt? A good restoration requires a conversation before any tools touch the piece.
What we restore
Victorian gold jewelry with mourning details, lockets, and hair work. Edwardian platinum filigree pieces with delicate milgrain and small old-cut diamonds. Art Deco rings and brooches with geometric layouts, calibre-cut gems, and original hand engraving. Mid-century cocktail rings with big colored stones and textured yellow gold. Retro estate pieces. Family heirlooms where the setting is worn thin but the stones are still sound. If you have a piece from any of these eras, bring it in.
Common restoration jobs
Rebuilding worn filigree where the wire pattern has thinned or broken. Re-engraving details that have worn away. Replacing missing accent stones with period-appropriate cuts (old mine cut, old European cut, rose cut) rather than modern brilliants. Re-soldering broken sections without disturbing the original patina more than necessary. Re-tipping or replacing prongs that have worn below safe limits. Re-building shanks on rings that have worn thin from decades of wear.
What we preserve
Patina, maker's marks, and hand engraving are part of the piece's character and we preserve them whenever possible. Modern machine finishing on a 1920s piece is a mistake, and we avoid it. Old scratches that tell the story of the piece are not always problems; we talk through what to clean and what to leave alone.
Timeline and cost
Restoration work is slower than standard repair. Budget several weeks for anything significant. Cost depends on the scope, the metal, and how much replacement material is needed. We quote in writing before starting and we do not exceed the quote without calling you. For irreplaceable pieces we sometimes recommend minimal restoration (stabilizing what exists rather than rebuilding) and explain why.
