Custom Jewelry Design
Sketch through casting, setting, and polish
How does custom jewelry design work?
We walk you through the full process: conversation, sketch, CAD render, wax model, casting, stone setting, and polish. Most custom engagement rings and fashion pieces take two to four weeks from approved design to finished piece. Pricing is competitive with comparable ready-made rings.
The conversation
Every custom project starts with a conversation at the counter. Bring whatever inspiration you have: a Pinterest image, a family ring you want to rework, a stone you already own, or just a sense of what you like. We sit down, sketch, discuss center stone options if you need one, talk through metal and setting choices, and work out a ballpark price. First consultations are free and there is no pressure to commit that day.
CAD preview
Once the direction is set, our designer builds a 3D CAD model of the piece. You receive photos or a shared link so you can rotate the ring, look at every angle, and request changes before any metal is cut. Changes are cheap at this stage. If you want the band slightly thinner, the head a little taller, the prongs more delicate, the accent stones placed differently, tell us at CAD and we adjust.
Wax, casting, and bench
When the CAD is approved, we produce a wax model, either 3D-printed from the file or hand-carved for pieces with vintage character. The wax is cast into your chosen metal (14k or 18k gold, platinum), and then our bench jeweler files, shapes, and finishes the piece. Stone setting follows. A solitaire takes a few hours to set; a micropave band can take a full day or more because each small stone is placed and secured individually under magnification.
Pricing
Custom work is often priced competitively with comparable ready-made pieces at a national chain, sometimes less. Larger center stones, complex pave work, and platinum over gold all move the price up. We provide a written quote after the CAD stage, before casting. You know the final number before we commit metal.
Using heirloom stones or metal
One of the most rewarding kinds of custom work is rebuilding an heirloom. We remove the stones from a grandmother's ring, a mother's pendant, or a family piece that no one wears, and design a new setting that makes the heirloom wearable again. The new piece keeps the stones (and the story) alive. If the original metal has sentimental value we can sometimes recycle it into the new piece, though for structural reasons we often use fresh metal for the core and return the old piece or scrap it at current gold prices.
