Jewelry Maintenance and Cleaning
Cleaning, polishing, prong checks, stone tightening
How often should I have my jewelry inspected?
Once a year for everyday pieces like engagement rings and wedding bands. We clean, polish, and check prongs and clasps at no charge. Regular maintenance catches small problems before they turn into lost stones or broken chains.
What annual maintenance includes
Professional ultrasonic and steam cleaning to remove build-up. Light polishing to buff out surface scratches. Prong check under magnification for wear or damage. Stone tightness check. Clasp inspection on chains and bracelets. For pieces we sold you, every bit of this is complimentary, forever. For pieces bought elsewhere, inspection and cleaning are still free; we quote any repair work separately.
Why maintenance matters
Most lost stones are preventable. Prongs wear down slowly and then fail suddenly. A routine prong check catches wear before the stone is at risk. Similarly, chains fatigue at the clasp and at specific links long before they break; a quick inspection spots trouble. Customers who come in annually almost never call us about lost stones. Customers who come in only when something has already gone wrong are the ones telling us the stories.
What you can do at home
Mild dish soap, warm water, and a soft toothbrush are fine for everyday cleaning on most diamond pieces. Avoid harsh chemicals, ammonia, chlorine, and ultrasonic cleaners for pieces with pearls, opals, emeralds, turquoise, or any porous stone. Take the ring off for gym work, rock climbing, mechanical work, and heavy gardening. Store pieces separately so they do not scratch each other.
When to come in
Once a year, minimum. Any time the piece feels different (loose, scratched, rattling). Any time you see a stone that looks like it might be shifting. Any time a chain develops a weak spot or a clasp starts catching. We look at it in under five minutes and tell you what we see.
